Veterinarian makes a living off house calls

If you’re a horse owner in Monterey, San Benito or Santa Cruz counties, you’re probably well aware of Dr. Heather Baker, owner of Monterey County Equine. She’s widely known — and much appreciated — for her ambulatory veterinary service in which she brings the clinic to you.

Her Ford F-350 is virtually jammed full of the latest and greatest technology that allows her to conduct medical treatments — including surgery, ultrasound and X-rays — in the field. For horse owners, Baker’s service is a welcome relief in because they don’t have to load a sick or injured horse into a trailer at 2 a.m. for a trip across the county to a clinic.
